SOFTWARE ERRORS
Software errors show up in many ways. It may just be simply a program not working, the system crashing when a program is used, the system failing to start or the a Stop Error (nicknamed a BSoD or Blue Screen of Death).
Software errors have a number of causes:-
• A virus infection
• A Windows Operating System error
• An Application Program which has become corrupt
• A Registry Corruption
• A Start Up Utility error
• A hardware problem
HARDWARE PROBLEMS
Hardware problems are usually highlighted by the machine not working at all, running very slowly or an Application Program not working properly.
Hardware problems have a number of common causes:-
• A Hard Disk failing
• The Main Memory failing
• Components damaged by a voltage surge
• Components damaged by overheating
• A corrupt BIOS (may be caused by the battery failing)
• Power Supply failure
• Motherboard failure
APPLICATION PARAMETER ERRORS
Most Application Software have a range of parameters associated with them. This can range from measurements in inches or centimetres, the default language / dictionary used through to the way the application starts and the first screen displayed. It may well be that the program was working correctly until an update; trying to get back to the original settings have just make the situation worse.
This type of problem may not stop a program from working but getting it to work the way you want can be difficult without knowing where to look and the terminology used by each software vendor.
