DATA LOSS FROM A VIRUS OR HARDWARE FAILURE
When a virus strikes or a component fails resulting in apparent data loss, the initial reaction of many is PANIC. After the initial reaction, attempts to cure the problem are made. Often this makes the situation worse and the final repair more difficult - especially if no disk image backup has been taken before the repair is attempted.
A Virus infection attempt is not uncommon - latest indications are that an unprotected machine connected to the internet would be infected within a quarter of an hour. Most infections are stopped by the virus protection on your machine. Those that get through have found a way to beat or disable your protection. Once on a machine, many viruses try to stop any other anti-virus software from being activated. Another ploy loading a copy in a hidden area of your computer which is only active when the the machine reboots - enabling the virus to re-installed.
Hardware failure is more rare but it does happen. For this type of failure, protecting the hard disk from damage (or further damage if the problem is with the hard drive itself) is critical. There are a number of options to recover data ranging from moving the hard drive to another computer to sending the drive to a professional data recovery company. The professional data recovery company solution is not cheap but maybe the only solution especially if a backup has not been made of critical data.
